Why is my Electricity Bill so High?

Below are the things that can increase your monthly electric bill:

  1. Appliances and gadgets that are idle but still plugged in: Appliances like coffee makers, DVD players still use electricity when plugged in even though you are not making use of them. So endeavor to unplug appliances you are not using.
  2. Continuous use of dishwashers, hairdryers, and laundry machines: These appliances use energy a lot. When you are on holiday or you have many guests, you will use more appliances. This will reflect on your electric bill.
  3. The use of incandescent lights: These lights draw energy a lot. Having 24 of those bulbs in your house will cost you $67. Holiday lightings can also increase your electric bill especially when they are on during the day.
  4. The use of a portable space heater or heater lamp: Letting your heater run 24 hours will add to your electric bill. A heater uses 1500 watts and this can add $150 to your electric bill. Also if your heat tape is on continuously even in summer, it will add to your electric bill. If your heater tape is not controlled thermostatically, it will keep on running unless you unplug it.
  5. Electric water heater, dehumidifier, snowmelt device (even in summer), pool pump all add to your monthly electric bill.

Tips on How to Save Money from Electricity Bill

You can actually save money from your electricity bill when your average electricity bill is low. Although there are some countries that have subsidized their electricity bill, not all have done that.

Below are the ways by which you can reduce your average electricity bill and save the rest of the money for something else.

1. Information

Know how many kilowatts your appliances use. You can Google search this to know or you can see it in your bill. When you are aware of this, you will know the appliances that use more energy in your home and you will know how to manage them.

2. Know Your Electricity Plan

Your electricity plan might be having certain benefits for you that you are not maximizing. There are some plans that reduce the price per kilowatt when it’s night (after 8 pm)

3. Energy Star Appliances

Energy star appliances don’t use much electricity. In fact, they use 50 percent of the electricity used by other appliances. Getting these appliances will reduce your average electricity bill.

4. Use LED Lightings

Instead of incandescent lights that use energy, LEDs save energy and they also last longer. They can last up to a decade. Replace all your bulbs with LED lights and you see a reduction in your electric bill.

5. Use Smart Power Strips

Appliances that consume energy just being plugged in can be controlled by using smart power strips. If you can’t unplug them, when you use this device, you will be able to turn on or turn off the appliances.

6. Insulation

Insulate your home properly. When you insulate your home, you won’t be too quick to on your AC during summer and your heater during winter.

7. Windows

The types of windows you have can also increase your average electricity bill. If your window is single-paned, double-paned, or triple-paned, or egress window, it would tell on your electricity bill. So instead of paned windows, go for double glazed windows. They help a lot to reduce your average electricity bill.

8. Try other means

During summer, you don’t have to keep blasting your AC. You can keep your windows up during the day, wear light clothes. Then at night, you can on the AC.

Also during winters, you can go for a furnace instead of heaters. Or you wear extra cardigans and use extra bedsheets.

Don’t use your little appliances too often as your hairdryer. You can opt for natural hair drying. Let the wind dry your hair.

Reduce the rate at which you use the coffee maker, laundry machines, dishwasher, snowmelt device, space heater, or dehumidifier.

Final Thoughts

Your average electricity bill for a 3 bedroom house can be a major concern for you when you see that it’s increasing monthly. Before you start ranting and getting worried over how you will increase your savings for the electric bill, check what you are doing to increase the bill and look for alternatives to reduce the bill.
